Rifle scopes are available in several models and brands all with a common objective. Some of the major brands are Bushnell scopes, Nikon scopes, Weaver scopes, Leupold scopes, Redfield scopes and others that specialize in night vision like ATN and Trijicon. The purpose is to blow up the target to a level easily seen by the human eye and aim / point to the target and provide a visual path of the bullet. Most scopes have protective coatings on the lens to reduce glare or low light for an improved image contrast to the surrounding target area leading to less eyestrain on the shooter. Generally rifle scopes have a few standard types of coatings. A fully coated lens ‘uses a single-layer on all outside surfaces of the glass that are exposed to the atmosphere. Multi coated uses a coating on each layer of the glass. Fully multi coated lens’ use many layers on all glass surfaces that make contact with the atmosphere.
A few general definitions of terms for rifle scopes are; Eye piece, Exit pupil, Ocular Lens, Power ring, Windage adjustment, Elevation Adjustment, Objective bell, Eye bell, Objective lens. A few helpful items to consider are Exit pupil with is the size of the column of light that leaves the scopes eye piece. Eye relief is the space that is between the scope and your eye to allow for full field of view. Most scopes provide a soft cup giving you extra protection from recoil of the fire arm. FOV (field of view) is the side to side measurement of the round area of the target and surrounding area. The definition is the width in feet/meters of the area that’s seen at 100 yards/meters. The wider the FOV the easier it is to see the target or track game. A higher magnification gives you a narrow FOV. The Windage is the right to left or horizontal adjustment usually the side of the turret of the rifle scope. The Elevation is the up and down or vertical adjustment most of the time on the top of the scope’s turret. Some makers provide “clicks” that you can feel and hear. Resolution is how clear or crisp the scope can display the fine details of your view. The Reticle is the crosshair pattern or dot that is placed in the eyepiece of the rifle scope with provides the guns position on the target. One more is Ocular lens, which is the lens nearest the eye.
Choosing high quality rifle scopes can be important to your shooting objective. Getting the wrong scope for your needs can not provide the optimum performance in your ability. As most people know the scope is like using a telescope or binocular, any type of optic that helps bring the object closer to the naked eye. Although many rifle scopes have several features and functions that other optics devices don’t need of have. Also the scopes mount to a firearm and need to be tailored to the rifle or hand gun and the operator. When both are set up and tuned properly, the results are impressive to say the least. Consider some of these items when choosing your rifle scope. Look at the construction, mechanics, image quality, magnification. When and where you’re shooting will impact the type of scope you need. Is it winter and cold with rain, snow, sun? Or are you practicing inside at a shooting range in climate controlled rooms. If you’re still unsure of what suites your needs, contact any manufacturer that you may gravitate to like Bushnell, Nikon, Leupold, Weaver or Redfield rifle scopes for assistance as they can help you select from many rifle scopes that each offer.
